Where to Try Real Kona Coffee in Waikiki
Beyond the big chains — finding authentic 100% Kona on Kalākaua Avenue.

Hawaii is the only US state that grows coffee, and Kona — on the Big Island's western slope — is where the legendary stuff comes from. The challenge: most "Kona blend" coffee in Waikiki tourist shops contains as little as 10% actual Kona coffee. The other 90% can be cheap commodity beans from Brazil or Vietnam. If you want to taste what real Kona coffee actually tastes like, you need to know where to find 100% Kona — and how to brew it right. This guide tells you exactly where to drink it in Waikiki and what to look for.
Authentic 100% Kona Coffee on Kalākaua Avenue
We brew with 100% Kona coffee sourced through Honolulu Coffee — no blends, no fillers. Pour-over, espresso, lattes, and whole beans to take home. Walking distance from Waikiki Beach. Open daily 7 AM to 9 PM.
What Makes Kona Coffee Special
Kona coffee grows on the volcanic slopes of Mauna Loa and Hualālai on the Big Island, between roughly 800 and 2,500 feet of elevation. The combination of rich volcanic soil, mild morning sun, afternoon cloud cover, and tropical rainfall creates ideal conditions for slow-ripened, complex coffee cherries. The result is a cup that's smooth, low in acidity, with notes ranging from bright citrus and brown sugar to nutty, chocolatey, and floral depending on the farm. Real Kona is one of the most expensive coffees in the world precisely because the growing area is so small (about 6 miles wide) and the harvesting is still done largely by hand.
- •Grown only in the Kona district of Hawaii Big Island
- •Hand-picked at peak ripeness, not machine-harvested
- •Smooth body, low acidity, complex flavor notes
- •One of the most expensive coffees in the world
- •Real 100% Kona is rare in tourist-area shops
How to Spot Real 100% Kona vs. "Kona Blend"
Hawaii state law currently allows a coffee to be labeled "Kona Blend" with as little as 10% actual Kona beans. The remaining 90% can be from anywhere. If you want the real thing, look for the words "100% Kona" on the label or ask the barista directly. If a shop is hesitant or vague about the percentage, it's probably a blend. Real Kona costs the shop more, so it's almost always priced accordingly — if a coffee menu has "Kona" at the same price as house drip, it's likely a blend.
How We Brew Kona Coffee
At Kona Coffee Donut we brew 100% Kona through several methods so you can taste the difference. Pour-over highlights the cleanest flavor and is our recommendation for first-timers — you taste exactly what the bean offers. Espresso pulls a more concentrated, syrupy version. Iced Americano is great on a hot Waikiki day and lets the floral notes shine through. Latte and cappuccino balance the coffee with steamed milk for a richer, smoother experience.
- •Pour-Over — cleanest expression, recommended for first-timers
- •Espresso — concentrated and syrupy, perfect with our Affogato
- •Iced Americano — floral notes shine on hot afternoons
- •Latte / Cappuccino — milk-based for a smoother experience
- •Cold Brew — slow-steeped, naturally sweet, low-acid
Take Kona Coffee Home
If you've fallen in love with the taste, take a bag home. Kona coffee makes one of the best Hawaii souvenirs — it travels well in beans, holds its flavor, and is something you can enjoy for weeks after the trip. We sell whole beans by the bag at the cafe, and our staff can recommend a roast level based on your preferred brew method.
Best Coffee + Donut Pairings
Kona coffee pairs beautifully with our mochi donut lineup. The clean, slightly sweet notes of Kona work especially well with rich or earthy donut flavors:
- •Pour-Over Kona + Original Glazed — purest expression of both
- •Iced Americano + Black Sesame Donut — savory-sweet balance
- •Latte + Ube Donut — milk softens both, the purple-cream visual is bonus
- •Affogato + Chocolate Donut — pure indulgence
- •Cold Brew + Strawberry Donut — sweet-tart afternoon combo
